Since the implementation of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) on the national level, and its State of Michigan complement, the Healthy Michigan Plan, OHC has been working hard to sign up its patients for health insurance through one of these platforms. Since OHC sees only the uninsured, you might well ask, “why would OHC do that”. The answer is because it is consistent with our mission statement. To paraphrase that statement: we are here to provide Hope in Jesus’ name through low-cost/free health care to those who lack access to such care. That doesn’t mean that we have to provide it here, but that we want those who need it to have it. If that means that, with health insurance, they can get it somewhere else, perhaps somewhere with greater resources than we have, then we want to help them do so.
That doesn’t mean that there will soon be no more need for agencies like OHC. The Federal government itself acknowledges that, when the ACA reaches full maturity, there will still be over 20,000,000 uninsured in the U.S. There are a variety of reasons for that, too lengthy to explain on this page. The 1200+ free and charitable clinics in our nation see only 2,000,000 patients per year. Do the math; there will continue to be a need for OHC for many, many years to come.
